A Double Blind Study of Viramid Ointment in the Patients with Simplex and Herpes Zoster

Abstract
We performed a double blind study to evaluate the therapeutic effect of Viramid ointment in herpes simplexand herpes zoster. We studied a total 83 patients including 48 herpes simplex, and 35 herpes zoster patients by topical application of Viramid ointment or placebo on the early lesion of each diseases.
The estimation of therapeutic effect of Viramid ointment was done by the duration from the first day of treatment to the days of vesicle disappearence in herpes simplex and crust formation in herpes zoster.
The results were as follows:
1) Herpes simplex: The percentage of disappearance of vesicles within second day
and 4th day of treatment were 46.4 To, 78.6 % respectively in the Viramida
group and 10.0 To, 65.0 % in placebo group. The time of disappearance of vesi-
cles in the Viramid9 group showed shorter than that in placebo group.
2) Herpes zoster: The percentage of crust formation within the 4th day and 6th
day of treatment were 31.4 To, 51.4 To respectively in Viramid group and
17.1 %, 37.1 % in placebo group. The time of crust formation in Viramid
group shorter than that in placebo group.
